Details: Ablative Laser Resurfacing

What is resurfacing?
Dermatologists have used skin resurfacing techniques for over 30 years to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and discolorations. Resurfacing—also termed “peeling”—usually involves removal of the outer layers of skin which stimulates the formation of new skin and new collagen. To remove the outer layers of skin, dermatologists use physical abraders, acids, and/or lasers.

What works the best?
The best results are produced with carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers; however, there are many different types of CO2 lasers made today. From our research and experience, the Mixto CO2 laser currently outperforms all existing devices based on patient satisfaction, safety, and tolerability.

What is a treatment like?
On the day of the treatment, we apply a numbing cream mask and have the patient relax in our office for about an hour. Then, we remove the mask, and Dr. Warner pulses the desired areas with the Mixto laser. A full face takes 20-60 minutes depending on how aggressive the patient wants to be. Pain during the procedure is very well controlled by the numbing mask.  In addition, we provide oral medications for patients who feel anxious.

What is the downtime?
After a treatment, the skin quickly becomes red, swollen and moist followed by a period of peeling and healing. Total downtime depends on how aggressive the patient wants to be.  Lighter peels take 4-5 days to heal. For more aggressive peels, healing takes one to two weeks.

How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments depends on your goals. After the initial healing phase, you will notice immediate improvement in the appearance of your skin. Further improvements gradually occur as the collagen remodels. We recommend reevaluation at six months to see if a second treatment is desired.

How long do the results last?
Results from a single treatment can be visible for 5-10 years.  Your skin will continue to age, however, depending on your health and skin care habits. Good sun protection and advanced skin care products can slow the aging process considerably and help you maintain the benefits of the treatment.
