Details: Lipodissolve
What is the medicine injected?
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a natural substance found in the cell membranes (the protective covering of cells). The PC used in lipodissolve is extracted and purified from soybean lecithin. PC is commonly used in cosmetics to condition the skin. It has been used in Europe since 1968 to treat arteriosclerosis, fat emboli, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes. In 1995, Dr. Patricia Rittes of Sao Paulo, Brazil, pioneered the injection of PC directly into the fatty problem areas.
What happens to the fat?
Immediately after injection the PC causes the membrane of the fat cells to burst. The contents of the fat cell are then gradually collected by the body’s white blood cells. The overlying skin retracts to the smaller size as new collagen is deposited in place of the dissolved fat.
Will Lipodissolve help me lose weight?
No. Similar to liposuction, Lipodissolve is for small areas of problem fat. It does not change your overall weight, nor does it promote continued weight loss. Lipodissolve is purely for sculpting purposes.
How long do the results last?
The fat cells that are “burst” by the Lipodissolve are permanently gone. However, if weight gain occurs, other fat cells will grow in size and affect the results. Therefore, it is important that proper diet and exercise be incorporated into the patient’s lifestyle for optimum results.
Which areas may be treated with Lipodissolve?
Lipodissolve works best on small areas of excess fat; the back “bra roll”, the fatty neck or jowls, side “love handles” or “muffin tops”, lower abdominal “pooch”, saddlebags, double chins,.
How many areas can I have treated at once?
Since Lipodissolve does cause initial swelling and bruising, we recommend that you only receive a maximum of 4 areas treated simultaneously. Most areas respond within 3-4 treatment sessions, spaced one month apart.
How long does Lipodissolve take?
Treatments take less than an hour, that’s why the procedure is often referred to as “the lunchtime lipo”
Does it hurt? What is the recovery time?
Patients feel a pinch from the actual injection. Fifteen minutes after the injection, patients will notice a warm, itchy sensation at the treatment site. For the next 3-5 days, the areas will be red and swollen and bruising may develop. The treated areas will ache and be sore to the touch for the next week. After 3 weeks you will notice the skin has retracted to a smaller size as the swelling resolves.
Who should NOT have Lipodissolve?
- Patients with a BMI (body mass index) over 30 (see chart)
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Patients allergic to soy or egg products
- Patients with unrealistic expectations
- Patients with chronic medical conditions (diabetes, renal failure, etc)
- Patients on blood thinners (coumadin, aspirin, motrin)
- Is Phosphatidylcholine (PC) regulated by the FDA?
- No. The FDA does not have jurisdiction over this product because it is neither a food nor a drug. It is a normal enzyme found in the human body. The PC used is manufactured from soy extract in sterile conditions and shipped from a compounding pharmacy.

What are the potential risks and side effects?
The Lipodissolve technique may cause bruising, irritation, discomfort and bleeding at the treated site. Rare but reported risks include skin infection and allergic reaction.
What are the alternatives?
Alternative treatments include liposuction, facelifts, neck lifts, body lifts or body sculpting surgery.

"I have always had trouble with my love handles and lower stomach. I always needed to buy a larger pant size because I didn't want my "muffin top" or stomach to hang over my pant waist. After 4 treatments, I've seen a big difference in the way my clothes fit and my overall appearance. I've gone down 1-2 pant sizes and have kept it off! "
