Restylane® was approved for use as a dermal filler by
the United States FDA in December 2003. It has since been
making headlines in the national media. Restylane® is
composed of non-animal based hyaluronic acid, a naturally
occurring substance in the body which serves to give the skin
fullness and volume. Restylane® is produced in the laboratory
and is not derived from animal products. Thus the risk of
animal-based disease transmission is virtually eliminated.
Restylane® has excellent biocompatibility; there is
only a minimal risk of allergic reaction and a skin test for
allergy is unnecessary. Compared to collagen, hyaluronic acid
takes a longer time to be absorbed and broken down by the
body and thus lasts approximately twice as long, between 5
and 6 months. Treatments are typically performed twice a year
or as necessary.
