What are varicose and spider veins?

Varicose veins are dark, swollen blood vessels that can be seen near the surface of the skin. Enlarged and twisted-looking, they can appear typically on the legs. Spider veins are very small varicose veins that are closer to the surface of the skin.

What causes varicose and spider veins?

This condition can result from many reasons:

  • A build-up of pressure caused by blood collecting in the area
  • A genetic predisposition to visible veins on the face and legs
  • Dysfunctional valves in the veins that allow blood to travel in the wrong direction
  • Obesity

Am I a candidate for treatment?

You are a candidate if you have spider veins on your legs. These veins will appear as small red or blue lines, sometimes having a ‘spiderweb’ appearance. For those patients with large ropey veins, we recommend seeing a vascular surgeon for evaluation.

What does the treatment involve?

We’ll use a series of micro injections to administer medicine directly into the veins. The medicine will close the veins, which your body will absorb over time.

This procedure can be easily completed during a lunch hour; appointments are available in 30 minute intervals. Please wear shorts to your appointment or bring shorts to change into.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients will require 1-3 visits. The number of visits required will depend on the number and severity of your vessels.

What are the side effects of the treatment?

Immediate side effects include:

  • Raised hives, which may look like small bug bites
  • Itching or a tingling feeling during and immediately after treatment

These side effects will resolve within a few hours.   Swelling and bruising in the injection area can also occur. An Arnica Montana supplement can help relieve any swelling and bruising, which typically resolves on its own within 2-7 days after treatment.

Rare side effects include:

  • Telangiectatic matting, which could appear as a light blush or bruise on the skin
  • Hyperpigmentation, a darkening of the skin in the treated area
  • Thrombophlebitis, vein inflammation
  • Neovascularization, the formation of new small blood vessels in the treated area
  • A feeling of ‘tiredness’ in the legs
  • Ulceration

What can I expect after treatment?

Your blood vessels will gradually lighten and fade away after just a few weeks. Larger veins may take longer to disappear. There is little to no down-time; walking is encouraged and strenuous activity may be resumed after 2 days. Compression stocking are not required after this treatment.
