Cheeks + Folds: Hot Spots for Filler

July 8, 2018 / / Newsletter

Cheeks and folds, nasolabial folds that is, are hot spots for filler.  Why is that?  Keep reading for a quick tutorial on the facial aging process and what YOU can do to gracefully fight it like the queen you are.

Why do our cheeks and nasolabial folds start to show age first?

Our face has a network of ligaments that hold our fat pads in place.  When we’re young, those fat pads are nice and high and the ligaments are strong and tight.  This is why most young people have round faces.

As we age, those ligaments get stretched and loose…and the fat pads start to droop and sag.  You probably notice that when we’re in our 20’s and 30’s, our faces begin to elongate and look mature.

Once we reach our 40’s and 50’s, the elongated look can look thin and sallow.  This is because part of the natural aging process is that our fat pads atrophy and get thinner.  Therefore, creases form and cheeks look deflated.

What are nasolabial folds?

The nasolabial folds are the folds or creases that extend from the nose to the mouth.  When the aging process first occurs, they may only be visible when you’re smiling.  As you continue to mature, the creases become more defined and may be visible and accentuated at all times.

Why is filler the first choice in treatment for cheeks and nasolabial folds?

Since most of us notice deeper creases and deflated-looking cheeks in our 30’s and 40’s, we’re not quite ready for surgical intervention.  Therefore, dermal fillers are a fantastic and natural-looking option with little-to-no-downtime.  They offer immediate results and last from 6-12 months, with new options like Vollure® and Voluma® lasting up to 24 months.  Many of our patients who choose filler for their cheek and nasolabial fold rejuvenation comment that:

  • “I feel 5 years younger!”
  • “I see ME again when I look in the mirror.”
  • “I feel refreshed AND I look refreshed now.”
  • “I can’t believe how easy the appointment was…I kept putting it off because I was afraid, but now I know that filler is easier than Botox®.”

Why would you choose filler over Botox® for cheeks and nasolabial folds?

Filler is the ideal choice when you’ve lost fullness, when deep creases have formed, or when the fat has started to atrophy.  Botox® is the ideal choice when lines have formed from too much movement (like the 11’s between your eyebrows that are caused by concentrating or frowning).
