Microneedling in summer is a common concern for anyone looking to improve their skin while enjoying the warmer months. Although increased sun exposure requires extra precautions, Microneedling can still be a safe and effective treatment when paired with proper aftercare and diligent sun protection.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses tiny, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These microchannels stimulate your body’s natural healing response, increasing collagen and elastin production to improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.
A handheld Microneedling pen is used during treatment and is safe for all skin types.
Depending on your skincare goals, your provider may recommend one of the following treatment enhancements:
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
A small sample of your blood is processed to isolate platelet-rich plasma, which is then applied during treatment to support healing and enhance improvements in skin tone, texture, and overall rejuvenation.
Hyaluronic acid
A deeply hydrating serum that replenishes moisture, helping the skin appear smoother, plumper, and more radiant after treatment.
Benefits of Microneedling in Summer
Microneedling can improve a variety of skin concerns, including:
- Acne scars
- Fine line and wrinkles
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Mild pigmentation concerns
- Overall skin tone and texture
What does it feel like?
Most patients describe Microneedling as a mild prickling or scratching sensation. To maximize your comfort, a topical numbing cream is applied before treatment.
Is there downtime?
Recovery is generally minimal, but following your pre- and post-treatment instructions is essential for optimal results.
Two weeks before:
- Avoid facial treatments such as lasers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and waxing.
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
Three days before:
- Discontinue blood-thinning medications or supplements only if approved by your prescribing provider.
- Stop using retinoids and exfoliating acids.
- Avoid waxing, threading, and depilatory creams.
- Minimize sun exposure.
One day before:
- NO SUN BURN or prolonged sun exposure!
The day of your treatment:
- Arrive with clean skin and no makeup.
- Stay well hydrated.
*If you have an active acne breakout, cold sore, or skin infection, please contact our office before your appointment so your provider can determine whether your treatment should be rescheduled.
Essential Aftercare for Microneedling During the Summer
You should completely avoid washing your face, sun exposure, exercise, strenuous activity, swimming, and touching your face unnecessarily after treatment.
First 24 hours:
- Apply a hydrating gel or moisturizer as recommended.
- Mild redness, swelling, tingling, or a sunburn-like sensation is normal.
24 hours after:
- Resume your normal skincare routine using a gentle cleanser, basic moisturizer, and a mineral sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- Continue avoiding retinoids and exfoliating acids. These can typically be reintroduced about one week after treatment, as directed by your provider.
Days 3-7:
- Your skin may feel dry and begin to lightly flake or peel.
- Continue moisturizing regularly and wear sunscreen every day.
You may also experience pin-point bleeding immediately after treatment, mild bruising, swelling, itching, or peeling. This is normal. Trust the process!
Protect your investment by supporting your skin with medical-grade skincare. Our office recommends:

- SkinMedica Rejuvenative Moisturizer
