Details

We’ll ask that you acquire routine medical clearance from your primary care doctor and standard laboratory tests.  It is also necessary for you to avoid certain medications, aspirin, herbal remedies and alcohol for 14 days prior to surgery.

In our office, Otoplasty is typically done with local anesthetic without intra-venous sedation. General anesthesia may occasionally be used as dictated by a person’s preference. Your safety and comfort is our primary consideration, so be sure to discuss this issue with Dr. To at your initial consultation.

Every case is customized to your individual goals.  Be sure to ask Dr. To this question at your consultation and he will show you exactly where your incisions will be placed.

You should experience very little pain during or after surgery.  Medication for discomfort is prescribed; however, you may require nothing more than Tylenol for the majority of the post-operative period.

Once Dr. To performs your modification surgery and removes the unwanted skin and tissue, it should not grow back. A secondary procedure is usually not necessary.

After surgery, you are allowed to return home for recovery. We will send you home with a large fluffy head dressing that we will remove for you in 24 hours.

Your sutures are removed 3-5 days after surgery and cosmetic tape will be applied at that time. Pain is usually minimal and most of our patients return to work a few days after surgery.

Some degree of bruising around the ears and swelling of the tissues can be expected.

We will ask that you wear an elastic headband or head wrap for 2 weeks after surgery to minimize any swelling.  This will also help to keep your ears in the proper position.

Otoplasty cannot correct natural asymmetry in the placement of your ears on your skull.  It also cannot lift jowls, sagging skin on the cheeks, or restore stretched earlobes. Additional complementary procedures may be necessary to achieve maximal results.

Surgery that is done for cosmetic reasons is typically not covered by insurance.  As Dr. To is a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, your surgery will be out-of-pocket.  Please discuss financial options or concerns with us during your initial consultation.
